Andik Says It's Too Early To Write Off Red Giants

PETALING JAYA: Don’t write off Selangor just yet.
This is a warning from nippy Indonesian winger Andik Vermansyah to their Super League rivals. The former giants of Malaysian football have yet to win a match this season to lie ninth in the 12-team league. The Red Giants lost 2-0 to Terengganu and then managed draws against double winners Pahang (1-1) and Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (1-1).
But Selangor showed signs of a revival, securing a dramatic come-from-behind win over league leaders Felda United in the FA Cup second-round match last week. They bounced back from two goals down to force the game into extra-time before winning 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
Said the 24-year-old Andik: “We had a slow start but are making progress now. The important thing is to have a winning mentality. We have to work hard on every aspect of our game, from passing to finishing. Hopefully, we can win a title this season.”
Andik is the live wire of the team since the departure of Golden Boot winner Paulo Rangel of Brazil to Terengganu. He has scored twice so far, including the fastest goal this season – a 35-second strike against JDT.
Selangor will be put to the acid test against Premier League champions Police at the Shah Alam Stadium.
The third-placed Cops are riding high and making heads turn with their free-scoring ways. Dramane Traore and Ali Ashfaq have combined to score nine goals between them in four matches in all competitions.
Selangor coach Mehmet Durakovic has warned his players to be wary of Police.
“Under coach Azman Adnan, Police have had a good start to the season. Their foreign and local players are combining very well. We have to come up with a plan to counter their attacking game,” said Durakovic.
