Selangor Rue Meltdown After FA Cup Exit

19 Mac, 2015

PETALING JAYA: The Red Giants are not going to cry over spilt milk.

Instead, Selangor coach Mehmet Durakovic has vowed to get them back on the right track after their painful exit in the third round of the FA Cup at the Shah Alam Stadium on Wednesday. They lost to Terengganu 3-1 in extra-time.

The Australian was frustrated at the way his team capitulated in the dying minutes.

Selangor were coasting towards a place in the quarter-finals, thanks to Brazilian Guilherme de Paula’s 22nd-minute goal, when Terengganu equalised at the end of regulation time through Cameroon defender Vincent Bikana.

It was then downhill all the way for Selangor as they were knocked out in extra-time after Robert Cornthwaite scored an own goal in the 105th minute and Terengganu skipper Zairo Anuar Zalani added the third in the 120th minute.

“We have to focus on the Super League now,” said a disappointed Durakovic.

Selangor felt they had a good chance to end their five-year barren spell in the FA Cup competition.

“It’s frustrating to go down like this. We had full control of the game. Terengganu had the momentum going after the equaliser. That was the turning point in the game. We deserved to win,” said a frustrated Durakovic.

Terengganu coach Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said “Selangor paid the price for being over-confident”.

“They (Selangor) wanted to finish us off early in the game ... they couldn’t last the pace for the full 90 minutes. We were stronger towards the end and, once we got the equaliser, we went for the kill,” said the former national coach.

Terengganu will play Perak in the quarter-finals next month.
