PETALING JAYA: Selangor coach Mehmet Durakovic is glad striker Muhammad Afiq Azmi is finally firing on all cylinders.

Thanks to Afiq’s brace, the Red Giants surged to the top of the 12-team Super League standings with a convincing 3-1 win over Armed Forces at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Saturday.

The lanky striker scored in the eighth and 51st minutes. Brazilian midfielder Leandro Dos Santos added the third by converting a spot-kick in the 71st minute. Mario Karlovic scored Forces’ consolation goal in the 25th minute.

The win was the Klang Valley giants’ fourth win in a row after collecting only two points in their opening three matches. Selangor now lead the standings with 14 points after seven matches on a better goal difference.

The 1.85m tall Afiq has now scored four goals in five matches to emerge as Selangor’s surprise top scorer after a disastrous campaign last season. Then, he could only manage a goal in the entire season.

Durakovic credited his team’s good form and Afiq’s good strike-rate to sheer hardwork in training.

“We don’t have any superstars in the team, so everyone is working hard. It’s starting to produce results,” said Durakovic.

“We give everyone in the team a chance and Afiq has taken his chance well. He’s a big boy and gives us a different dimension up front. He also combines well with the other players.

“Afiq got married recently. He is a better player and takes more responsibility now compared to last season. I also think his confidence level is up as he’s playing and scoring regularly now,” added Durakovic.
