PETALING JAYA: Pahang surged to the top of Super League for the first time this season after a slim 1-0 win over Perak.

Argentine Matias Conti was the hero at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan last night, converting a penalty in the 70th minute. It was the Elephants’ fifth straight win and they leapfrogged from fifth to replace Police as leaders in the 12-team league with 20 points from 10 matches. Perak dropped a rung to fifth with 17 points.

Nigerian striker Dickson Nwakaeme was a constant menace to the Perak defence. It was through one of Nwakaeme’s mazy runs that resulted in the ball hitting Muhammad Tuah Iskandar Jamaluddin in the arm and earning Pahang the penalty.

Conti stepped up and sent Perak goalkeeper Mohd Zamir Selamat the wrong way.

Besides the Super League crown, Pahang are still in the hunt for three other titles – FA Cup, Malaysia Cup and AFC Cup.

Last Tuesday, Pahang took a step nearer to a last-16 berth in the AFC Cup with a 7-4 win over Myanmar’s Yadanarbon FC in their penultimate Group G match.

The Elephants’ next task is against east coast neighbours Kelantan in the first leg of the FA Cup semi-final at the Darul Makmur Stadium on Saturday.

The M-League will take a break for the SEA Games and resume on June 20.
