Money Talks In M-League From Next Season

6 Mei, 2015

PETALING JAYA: A point in next season’s M-League is worth RM41,000.

This was disclosed at the Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) workshop which ended here on Wednesday.

FMLLP is a company set up by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and MP & Silva, an international media rights company, to manage the M-League from next year onwards. Together with the M-League teams, the three parties will be the stakeholders in FMLLP to manage the M-League’s broadcast and commercial rights.

Under the merit-point system to be introduced next year, points will be awarded based on a team’s league position, progress in the Cup competitions (FA Cup and Malaysia Cup) and the number of live matches shown.

Kevin Ramalingam, the chief executive officer of FMLLP, said the two-day workshop proved to be an eye opener for the stakeholders and FAM affiliates.

“The participants were eager to know what was in store for them, especially the financial disbursement to all the teams,” said Kevin.

“There is money to be made from the merit-point system. With each point worth RM41,000, a team can receive up to a 500% increase in revenue,” he added.

FAM deputy president Datuk Seri Affendy Hamzah said the workshop, which was to update the teams on the 2016 privatisation plan, was a success.

“The signs are encouraging. They are prepared to move towards privatisation,” said Affendy.

The FAM and MP & Silva signed a deal in January with the London-based company promising a guaranteed RM1.26bil revenue over a 15-year period for the FMLLP. Under the deal, MP & Silva will give RM70mil per season in the first six years with FAM getting 40% with 30% going to the M-League teams and 30% to run the M-League, referee and youth development programmes.
