Job Done By JDT In AFC Cup

12 Mei, 2015

PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) got the job done and made sure they will be at home in the AFC Cup round of 16.

The Southern Tigers wrapped up their Group F campaign in style, thrashing Singapore’s Balestier Khalsa 3-0 at the Larkin Stadium on Tuesday.

The win, courtesy of late goals by striker Mohd Safee Sali (76th minute), midfielder Mohd Safiq Rahim (86th) and Argentine striker Luciano Figueroa (89th), ensured JDT top the group with 15 points.

Kitchee of Hong Kong finished second in the group with 11 points after being held to a 2-2 draw by India’s East Bengal at the Mongkok Stadium.

The win was JDT’s ninth at home this season and they will host Bengaluru (India) in the last 16 at Larkin on May 27.

JDT, kept at bay by the stubborn Balestier defence in the first half, got their lucky break when second-half substitute Safee scored with an acrobatic volley after latching onto winger Nazrin Nawi’s free-kick in the 76th minute.

Skipper Safiq doubled JDT’s lead 10 minutes later by slotting in substitute Mahali Jasuli’s cutback inside the box off a counter attack.

Striker Figueroa completed the rout when his free-kick from the edge of the box was deflected off the Balestier wall a minute before the end.
