Hamidin replaces Datuk Sudarsono Osman as the national team manager ahead of the
2018 World Cup qualifiers.
PETALING JAYA: Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin is the new national team manager.
Hamidin’s appointment was made by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) executive committee at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya on Thursday.
Hamidin, who is also the FAM secretary-general, said he is ready to help national coach Dollah Salleh for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, which will also double up as qualifiers for the 2019 Asian Cup.
“The national team’s target is to perform commendably in the World Cup qualifiers and to qualify for the Asian Cup,” said Datuk Hamidin.
Hamidin replaces Datuk Sudarsono Osman, whose last assignment was last December’s Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup in which Malaysia finished runners-up to Thailand last December.
In the World Cup qualifiers, Malaysia are in Group A with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Timor Leste. The home-and-away round-robin competition starts on June 11 and finishes on March 29 next year.
There will be eight groups of four teams in the qualifiers. The top eight teams and four best group runners-up will qualify for the Asian Finals (2018 World Cup), as well as the 2019 Asian Cup tournament, which will be hosted by the UAE.
The remaining 28 teams will compete for the other 12 places at the Asian Cup (2019), which has been expanded to 24 teams.
Malaysia qualified for the Asian Cup in 1976 and 1980. In 2007, Malaysia were given the automatic slot by the virtue of being hosts.
