Champions Malaysia Knocked Out of Asean U-16 Football Meet

PETALING JAYA: Defending champions Malaysia were embarrassingly shown the exit in the group stage at the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Championship.

Malaysia went down 2-0 to Laos in their final Group A match at the Army Stadium in Phnom Penh on Tuesday to finish third on six points.

Laos finished top of the group with 13 points. Thailand are second, also on 13 points, to join Laos in the semi-finals.

Thatsaphone Saysouk (19th minute) and Bounphachan Bounkong (21st) scored for Laos. Malaysia were reduced to 10 players after Muhd Izreen Izwandy was shown a straight red card deep into injury time.

Malaysia, under coach P. Somasundram, ended their campaign with two wins and three losses.

The Malaysians defeated Vietnam (1-0) and Brunei (1-0), but lost Thailand (3-1), Timor Leste (3-1) and Laos.
